Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

In my undergraduate degree, I had many opportunities to gain independent research experience and knew that becoming a scientist was the career path I wanted. Pursuing a graduate degree will allow me to learn and develop the professional skills needed for a career as a chemist.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

UBC is an internationally recognized institution and British Columbia is a beautiful province. The campus is also amazing and has all the facilities needed for me to conduct my research.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

The chemistry department at UBC has a great reputation and the number of students in the graduate program makes it very desirable for collaborating. There are also a large number of students enrolled in the undergraduate program allowing for mentoring opportunities for graduate students.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

It is very easy to adjust to life in Vancouver. There is a community for just about any hobby or activity making it very easy to balance your studies with your social life.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

My undergraduate research experiences helped direct my focus on the career path that was right for me and narrowed down my fields of interest.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

Biking in Vancouver is some of the best in Canada and the city is very accommodating to cyclists. The north shore also has some amazing hikes and scenery that make for a great day or weekend outings!

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Take care of yourself first and foremost, and celebrate your achievements. Grad school is a marathon, not a sprint and some parts will be harder than others. Work hard and make the most of your free time.
